Ahmednagar Fort (Bhuikot Fort)

Historic Ahmednagar Fort has been seen so many historical events since its construction which started in 1553 till to the independence of India. It is also known as "Bhuikot Killa". Fort is located in Ahmednagar city of Maharashtra state, India. In 1947, the Bhuikot fort was handed over to the Government of India.

History of Ahmednagar City and Bhuikot Killa

At the end of the 15th century, In 1486, the then Bahamani kingdom was divided into five sub-kingdoms. In 1490 in order to expand and protect the state "Malik Ahmad Shah Bahiri" started developing a new city near the former city of Bhingar on the banks of the river Sina. The city got its name "Ahmednagar" from Nizams name "Ahmad".

In 1553, Hussain Nizamshah started the construction of the "Bhuikot fort". In 1494, the core structure of the city was completed and very shortly Ahmednagar became the capital of the Nizam Shah. The city was then compared to the prosperous cities of Cairo and Baghdad. Ahmedshah, Burhanshah, Sultana Chandbibi ruled in Nizamshahi which lasted till 1636.

Ahmednagar city has seen many historical events and even today many old buildings bear testimony to this fact. Following are some of the most important events which happened in the city and fort

  1. In July 1600, Chand bibi fought in the war to protect Bhuikot fort. But the Mughals conquered it.
  2. The Mughal emperor "Shah Jahan" Captured Ahmednagar in 1636.
  3. In 1759, the Peshwas took control of Ahmednagar. The Peshwas bought it from the Mughals.
  4. In 1797, the Peshwas handed it over to the Shinde family.
  5. In 1803, the British conquered Ahmednagar. August 12 In 1803, it was conquered by General Wellesley for English power.

During the "Chalejao" movement of 1942, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Maulana Azad, Dr. P.C. Ghosh, and other national leaders were imprisoned in Bhuikot fort in the city.

  1. The famous book "Discovery of India" was written by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in this fort. Some of the manuscripts of this book can still be seen here.
  2. In the same fort, Dr. Prafulla Chandra Ghosh put into words the book "History of Ancient Indian Civilization".
  3. Living in Ahmednagar city, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar wrote "Thoughts of Pakistan" and Maulana Azad wrote "Gubar-e-Khatir".
