History of Kanheri Caves:

Kanheri Caves is also called 'Kanhagiri' or 'Krishnagiri' which is a famous center and monastery of Buddhism, located 32 km from Mumbai, and 6 km from Borivali. There are over a hundred Buddhist caves that were built in the 1st century located in the middle of Sanjay National Park, Borivali East, Mumbai.

There are 2 magnificent 32 feet high Buddha statues at the entrance of the cave, and many types of Buddha meditation postures are also carved on the entrance wall. Every day thousands of tourists from many places come to see the Kanheri Caves in the National Park of Borivali.

The architecture of Kanheri Caves:

There are 109 caves in Kanheri. The nearby Elephanta Caves are made up of elegant, luxurious, and beautiful facets. The ground in each cave is the stone foundation of the cave. It has a magnificent hall with large pillars. It also has the sacred stupa of Buddhists. Above you will find a water tank. In ancient times, large tanks were filled with rainwater.

When the caves were completed, they were transformed into monasteries, where further Buddhist activities took place. Most of the caves were used by Buddhist devotees for living, studying, and meditation. Councils are filled with large caves. Stupas were used for prayers there.

Number 3 cave is the largest cave in Borivali National Park and a large Chaitya Stupa stands here.
